Covid-19 Burnout: 3 simple steps to help students at your school

Both students and teachers have been affected by the instability caused by COVID. Thinking too far ahead can be a difficult task; adults can't plan overseas holidays or work trips, and for teenagers, it's an inability to plan their lives!

Swivel Careers team offers you 3 simple zero-cost ideas to help increase positivity in students with regards to their future careers:

Step 1

Encourage a growth mindset.  Attitude is everything and costs nothing.

Employers repeatedly say this is one of the most important things they look for when hiring staff, and this is a key message to share with students. A positive attitude and being an agile thinker in challenging times can be a huge asset to a company.

Great attitude

Step 2

Set up a LinkedIn Profile - Follow leaders in the industries you are interested in.

You can try this activity in one of your classes:

What influencers are your students following on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or other social media platforms? What are the qualities that make these people attractive to them? Do they see these qualities in themselves? How can they nurture them?

Your students may not be active on Linkedin, so you could introduce your senior students to this network and share a couple of inspiring professionals they could start following as preparation for their work lives.

Step 3

Research the positive changes

The world’s response to COVID-19 has resulted in the most rapid transformation of the workplace in history.  But this doesn’t mean all the changes were negative. Some really creative and innovative ideas have been implemented during this past year to help businesses. What can they find?

Positive changes

I am so grateful for the opportunity of having received coaching sessions from Swivel Careers as they are supportive, empowering and have helped me confidently map out a clear career path whilst still pushing me in the right direction towards having a successful career.

The main difference between Swivel and previous careers sessions was that the Swivel session was based on real-world recruitment techniques, and dealt with how careers and recruitment will actually work in the future.

No matter what stage of life you are in, whether you are a working professional or a student their comprehensive and precise analysis of your personality and goals will help you just as it helped me. I personally was shocked at the amount of information Swivel managed to provide for me and how successful they were in aiding my search for a career path that suited me best.

I had a bit of an idea on what I wanted to do based on my interests, but after being told to ‘just do some more research’ by guidance counsellors I wasn’t 100% on what actions I needed to take to turn that interest into a positive direction.

We talked about how dynamic the work was from day to day, different types of civil engineering and I actually got to visit some of the sites they’re working on.  It’s definitely made me more confident in choosing civil engineering as a career and encouraged me to look at gaining work experience early on in my degree
